The Faculty of Visual Arts was established in1950 at the Banaras Hindu University. It is one of the premier art institution in India. It offers degree programs leading to professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in the specializations of Applied Art, Painting, Textile Design, Plastic Art (Sculpture) and Pottery Ceramics. The Faculty also offers excellent doctoral research facilities in all five disciplines.

The Department of Applied Arts at BHU’s Faculty of Visual Arts was established in 1963 and offers UG, PG, PhD, Diploma, and Certificate courses in Applied Arts.

Faculty members actively engage in research, national and international art events, and prestigious fellowships, including awards from Lalit Kala Akademi, AIFACS, and international institutions like Johns Hopkins University and New York State University. The department has undertaken major research projects under SPARC, IMPRESS, PMMMNMTT, and the IoE Scheme (BHU) in collaboration with Michigan State University, MICA (USA), and NITI Aayog. Additionally, faculty regularly publish research in UGC CARE and peer-reviewed journals, participate in international and national conferences, and contribute to initiatives like the MoU with NIESBUD (GoI) and the Virtual Exchange Program with Plymouth College of Art, UK.
